Top Mistakes When Starting a Workout Routine

Do you feel stuck when it comes to your fitness journey? Have you found yourself making one (or all) of these very common mistakes?

I see it over and over again, hell, I have even made every single one of these mistakes myself over the years.

Keep reading to see if one of these is preventing you from moving forward in your fitness journey.

Starting a fitness routine without knowing your WHY.

It’s really hard to stick to something when you don’t really know why you are doing it. You can tell yourself to do it because you think it’s “the right thing to do” but is it? Does it align with your goals, your wants for your future, or your current life? Can you see yourself living the life you “think” you want?

Knowing why you are getting up early to throw on that sports bra is huge and the key to sticking with it. Doing it for any other reason other than your WHY is going to lead to you quitting.

So now the big question is, how do you figure out YOUR why?

It’s just a matter of continuing to as yourself why you are choosing to exercise and eat differently, over and over again until you reach that “oh yeah that’s the reason this is so important to me” feeling.

Remember, there is no right answer, there is only YOUR answer and it could be anything to wanting to avoid chronic illness that has plagued your family,  wanting to feel confident going on dates, or keeping up with your kids daily activities.

It doesn’t matter what your WHY is, it only matters that you can keep going back to it every single time you are ready to give up and the reason alone will make you want to keep at it.

All or Nothing Thinking

“That’s it, tomorrow I’m going to start exercising every day and throw out all the junk food in the house.”

Does this sound familiar???

We have all been there, the “I’ve had enough of this” feeling, but you may have noticed that hasn’t exactly worked out for you in the past. This idea that you are throwing everything you have been accustomed to doing out the window and completely changing your daily routine is just going to set you up for frustration and stress.

It’s not an all-or-nothing approach, it’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that compromise that will get you where you want to be. You can’t build muscle without rest, and you probably aren’t going to want to eat healthy without a little bit of indulgence too.

I’m not going to preach the 80/20 rule, what I am going to tell you is that learning to understand and listen to your body needs to start now. It doesn’t happen overnight but if you take the time you will be able to live a life that feels balanced without all the rules.

Having NO PLAN

While I’m a big believer in taking messy action, in this case sometimes in nice to have a little direction.

Maybe you don’t have the “perfect” workout routine yet, but knowing you are going to take action by just walking so you can figure out the plan later is still having a plan.

So how many days can you work out and how do you want to spend that time? Have an idea of where you are going to at least start.

No Support

Trying to do this all on your own is HARD, who do you complain to when it feels like you are getting nowhere? Who is going to lift you up and tell you to keep going? Who is going to answer your questions when you aren’t sure what to do next? Who can you turn to when you need a shoulder to cry on, or a cheering squad?

Needing help, support, or a cheer squad is an important part of this journey.

Reach out, ask for help, find your tribe and support. Whether they are close friends, family, or you choose to hire a personal trainer, surround yourself with people who want to help support you to reach your goal.

Hey there, I’m Heather!

A little bit about me: I grew up in Maine, I’m a homeschooling mom, I love country music, hiking, and spending time with friends.

I’m an ACE-certified personal trainer, I’m TRX certified, and an ACE Youth Fitness Specialist.

I have always had a love of being active, but after the birth of my two kids I was exhausted, I didn’t like how I felt or moved in my own body.

I knew something had to change.

I started working out at home, without equipment, and discovered I didn’t need a fancy, expensive gym to start feeling better about myself.

My own fitness journey inspired me to become a personal trainer so that I could start helping other moms who were just like me.
